Editor’s note: In a previous post, we reported about a massive prostitution raid at a club in Zhengzhou in which busloads of suspected sex workers were being taken away by police. Details are still sketchy at this time as police are still reticent to reveal much information, but the most telling information may be the most accessible – an internet page advertising the club’s “services” to anyone with an internet connection.

In this translated Chinese media article, we delve behind what kind of secrets a purported “sex club” may try to conceal within its walls, and exactly what the requirements are to be qualified to work at such a place.

On the morning of November 2 at around 01:00, a netizen named @Cocomiss broke the news that at approximately 23:00 on the evening of November 1, a large-scale night club in the Zhengdong New District called “Royal No. 1” (中原第一会所) was surrounded by a large number of police officers who forced a sizeable crowd of workers onto coach buses and then drove them away.

That afternoon after the news broke, a spokesperson for the provincial public security office confirmed the news and issued an official statement via Weibo.  

“Royal No.1” suspected of illegal sex activities for a long time

At 12:43 on November 2, the official Central China Public Security Bureau published this statement on its Weibo account: “On the evening of November 1, after a meticulous investigation performed by the Public Security Bureau, a vigorous procedure in keeping with the law was executed by provincial police officers against strongly suspected illegal sexual activity that took place at the ‘Royal No. 1’ nightclub in Zhengzhou. At present, the investigation is currently underway.”

According to other information, ‘Royal No. 1’ nightclub had long been suspected of being involved in illegal sexual activities. The police executing this procedure were not native to the area, but officers from nearby villages.

A glimpse into the club’s inner workings

At 16:00 the next afternoon on November 2, a reporter from the Zhengzhou Evening Post arrived at the ‘Royal No. 1’ nightclub that is located on Dongsi Commercial Inner Ring Road only to find its front doors firmly shut. In front of an adjacent tall building, a group of security guards were discussing the case.

“There were so many people! I would estimate that there were around a thousand police officers here; some officers were wearing helmets and looked like SWAT team members from their appearance. Except for janitorial and outside security staff, all the other staff personnel, including supervisors and female workers, were detained and taken away. There must have been at least ten busloads of people,” one security guard confirmed.

“I don’t know, it seemed like they were mostly taking away women; all of them were wearing work uniforms that exposed a lot of leg, they must have been freezing in the cold,” said another security guard.

At that moment, three men stepped out of a car. After looking around the surrounding vicinity, the man holding the car keys interrogated us, “There are several underground parking garages in this area, a friend of ours who came here last night got caught, and now we’re helping him retrieve his car.”

The man continued, “This was a really big raid; our mate really hit a spot of bad luck this time.” He admitted that he had personally come to ‘Royal No. 1’’ several times in the past. The interior of this nightclub is luxuriously decorated and has many private rooms. Upon entering, clients are asked if they want girls; who are classified by “model types”. The man said that he had previously attended the nightclub on business, and that even if he were to spend a month’s salary, he would still not be able to afford the services of this nightclub.

A pedestrian who works in the Commercial Inner Ring Road said the road in front of the nightclub is filled with cars at night. Although he doesn’t have a good grasp about cars, he did once recognise a Rolls-Royce parked at the entrance.

Afterwards, the reporter searched for information on the ‘Royal No. 1’ nightclub on the Henan Provincial Trade and Commerce website, but there was no record of the nightclub.

A spokesperson for the Provincial Public Security Bureau stated that they will temporarily not be publishing any further information.

Called the “No. 1 Meeting Place of Central China”
Upon searching for information regarding the ‘Royal No. 1’ nightclub, it was discovered that a website with the domain name www.hjyh666.com was shut down yesterday afternoon at 14:00. This website attested to the high scope and grade of the nightclub by calling it the “number one large-scale meeting place in central China.”

Another website with the domain name of www.hjyhhs.com stated that club had been founded in 2012 and had 156 large private rooms. The website has a home page, a help wanted page for models, a listing of services provided and FAQ section. The website lists the address for ‘Royal No. 1’ as “Intersection of Dongsi Street, Commercial Inner Ring, Central Business District, Zhengzhou.”

Under “Services Provided”, clients can see a price list for the women. Fees range from 400 RMB for shorter women and up to 4100 RMB for women with a height of 170 cm. As one add states, “Height 168 cm and up with excellent appearance and quality. Daily fee: 600-3000 RMB”. Under “Models Wanted for Hire” the following information was posted on the website:

“Requirements: clean girls with a height of at least 165 cm with excellent appearances; height requirements may be relaxed if applicant displays outstanding appearance.

Salary from “tipping” is allocated from evaluation into four separate categories for persons of outstanding merit, these are 1500 RMB, 1800 RMB, 2100 RMB.

Interviewees, please take note: please wear casual clothes to work. Must bring along a dress and high heels. This company has a relaxed attitude towards the workplace, but please do not wear revealing clothes.”

In the column marked “Recharging Your Account” was this information: “The club will gift each client 1500 RMB when recharging your account for 3000 RMB; clients recharging 10,000 RMB will receive 7,000 for free; clients recharging 20,000 RMB and up will be gifted the same amount for free and receive special VIP privileges.”

1) Question: When did ‘Royal No.1’ begin operations?
