Danger: China’s Public Fountains May Not be as Harmless as You Think

Danger: China’s Public Fountains May Not be as Harmless as You Think
Aug 22, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Most people would never suspect an innocent looking public fountain to be a source of danger, especially in the summer months when it brings so much joy and relief to the young and old alike.

However, two recent incidents have highlighted the potential dangers of public fountains. The first incident happened on August 1 at the newly constructed Zhou Cultural Center Plaza in Enshi City, Hubei. A small boy was playing in the fountain but was shot two meters in the air after stepping on the fountain’s nozzle. The boy was left with a bloodied nose and lips and the clothes he was wearing were ripped to shreds.

A more serious incident occurred on August 14 at the Changyi City Cultural Square in Weifang. An eight year old boy’s rectum was ruptured after he stood directly over the fountain nozzle. Though his life is no longer in danger, he is still said to be in serious condition in hospital.

So next time you see a harmless-looking fountain shooting water in the air, think twice about stepping directly onto it.

I feel that this piece highlights the dangers of letting young children run about unsupervised in water fountains and large crowds. The fountains are fine, the approach to parenting is not. Know what your kid is doing around that kind of technology. Teach your idiot 8 year old not to stick a bodily orifice over a high-powered stream of water. Make sure your toddler is not sitting on top of the spouts that shoot water far into the air. Of course, in order to do ANY of that, you have to have kids who are capable of listening to adults in the first place. Not that I am opposed to free-range parenting, but there are limits. I seriously don't get how some grand/parents freak the hell out if their kid gets so much as a scrape on the arm (and act like the kid could have died), yet don't give a shit if their child is running about somewhere (they don't exactly know where), in a large public area.

BAHAHAHAA I know its wrong, but somethings terrible just make me laugh "An eight year old boy’s rectum was ruptured after he stood directly over the fountain nozzle" perhaps sat on it??? where were his clothes? its a bit of common sense really, if you see a fountain shoot water 20 meters into the air, you know its going to be powerful. it the water only shoots 2 meters into the air its not going to be very powerful.
