As the mercury spikes to 42℃ in many parts of Hunan Province and respite from the heat is nowhere in sight, one group of men have decided to take matters into their own hands by taking their daily Mahjong habit underwater.

The mastermind behind the idea was a diving instructor called Zhang Pin from Xiangtan City. He thought that hanging out at the bottom of the pool with his colleagues would be a great way to escape the heat—and he was probably right.

The first step was to make a Mahjong table out of aluminum alloy and lead to prevent it from floating to the surface. The actual tiles were made using polyurethane, an extremely endurable synthetic material that doesn’t float in water. The overcome the issue of sound – or lack thereof – the team uses hand gestures to communicate and instead of using dice, they play rock-paper-scissors to decide which tile to move.

“Not everyone can play underwater Mahjong. Players have to be certified divers,” says Zhang Pin who is still in the midst of refining the art. However, until then, he and his colleagues get to enjoy hanging out in a pool that’s 29℃ but only feels like 24℃, or so he says.
