Another Taxi Driver Caught Ripping Off Japanese Tourist in Shanghai

Another Taxi Driver Caught Ripping Off Japanese Tourist in Shanghai

Only one month after a taxi driver in Shanghai extorted 2300 RMB from a Japanese tourist for a four kilometer journey, the local taxi industry has once again made the news for all the wrong reasons.

On October 2 a Japanese person took a taxi from Terminal 1 at Pudong Airport to Hongqiao. The passenger gave 200 RMB to the taxi driver – surnamed Huang – to pay for the ride, but Huang pointed to the meter which indicated a fare of 1115 RMB. The passenger didn’t have any more RMB and gave Huang 1000 Japanese Yen instead. However, this did not satisfy Huang and so the passenger gave him another 1000 RMB. Huang eventually typed a figure into a cell phone – 15,000 Yen (940 RMB) – which the passenger eventually handed over.

That afternoon, authorities caught Huang as he was driving back towards Pudong Airport. The passenger got all the money back and Huang was detained for ten days. Moreover, Huang’s taxi license will most likely get revoked since he also tampered with the taxi meter, which will put him off the road for five years.

Actually, taxi ripoffs are common scam anywhere in the world. I came across such attempts in many places and also had Asian friends who got riped off 100eur for a 8eur short distance ride in Europe.
