Recently, the complaints center of the Traffic Administration Law Enforcement General Team received a call from a foreigner claiming he/she had been charged 2300 RMB for a four kilometer journey.

The customer took a cab by the Shanghai Sunway Taxi Co. LTD at Longyang Road subway station in Pudong New District and was heading towards the Garden Hotel in Huangpu District. However, four kilometers later when the cab pulled over at a gas station, the meter fare had already risen to 2,300 RMB. What’s more, the cab driver locked the doors and threatened the passenger to not make any calls. The customer only had 500 RMB on them at the time but when the driver wouldn’t let him/her out of the cab, the passenger handed over foreign currency valued at 1,800 RMB. Upon receiving the money, the driver called over another taxi driver, told the passenger to get out and sped away.

Upon receiving the complaint by the passenger, Shanghai’s Traffic Administration Law Enforcement General Team investigated the allegations, eventually identifying a man surnamed Zhao as the culprit. Zhao admitted taking the customer, but initially denied forcibly demanding a large sum of money. However, after further interrogation Zhao finally admitted the allegations.

Zhao has since had his license revoked and the customer was refunded the 2300 RMB in full.
