197 Arrested for Spreading Online Rumors about Tianjin Explosion, Stock Market Crash

197 have been arrested in China recently for spreading online rumors about recent crises online including the recent stock market crash and the Tianjin warehouse explosion. Furthermore, 165 social media accounts have been shut down by the Ministry of Public Security.

Police have found that rumors spread by a small number of users have caused had a negative influence both inside and outside the country. Rumors relating to the Tianjin warehouse explosion included a rumor that the disaster killed more than 1,300 people and destroyed all surrounding residential areas, and that toxic gases from the explosion affected areas in Beijing.

As for the stock market crash, a Netizen spread a rumor that a man committed suicide in Beijing's financial district. Other rumors stated that a securities company gave their 5,000 VIP customers an early warning, and the crash was caused by evil relatives of Mainland Chinese leaders living in Hong Kong.
