Yes, Chinese Work Hard, Have Long Hours, But Is This a Good Thing?

The Chinese work ethic has become a hot topic in the United Kingdom this past week after the British Conservative Party for British citizens to “work like the Chinese.” The Guardian published an article on Tuesday titled, “How hard does China work?”

The article states that Chinese workers work an average of 2,000 to 2,200 hours per year. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development reported that Britons work an average of 1,677 hours per year.

The Wall Street Journal reported that in 2013, Chinese migrant workers worked 8.8 hour days. Nearly 85% worked more than 44 hours a week, and had an average per capita salary equal to 270 British pounds. This intense work schedule led to overworked migrants who often suffered health problems.

Across all economic levels, Chinese people are becoming wealthier, but are also over-tired. The Boston Consulting Group recently reported that more than half of affluent Chinese suffer from poor health due to “job stress, family obligations, and long hours at work” “This problem is increasing rapidly, especially among young people,” the report warned.

It has been reported that as many as 600,000 Chinese die every year from overwork.

5 years ago I saw a bloke working hard. He was stacking bricks. I watched him for a while and when he saw me I gave him some applause. He just stared at me. When I returned along that street about 10 minutes later I saw him asleep by a tree. I've never seen another Chinese person working much at all, much less hard.

Oh dear, fooled by CCP's propaganda. Long work hours = hardworking? Write a report on the general work ethics of chinese. LOL The success of china has more to do with exploitation of international trading and legal loopholes, counterfeits, stealing copyrights, shrewd techological copying, abundant supply of relatively cheap labor. This is the type of profit china makes. The best and just about the only way to protect yourself from a country like this is take your business elsewhere, period.

There's a big difference between working hard and working long hours. A lot of Chinese jobs require employees to be present all day but with little actual work to do. Of course a lot of people do have real long work days and responsibilities but that is true anywhere. Due to low hourly wages and guanxi jobs, there are millions of Chinese employed in jobs where they don't really have to do much of anything.
