“Underground” Visa Business Booming in Guangzhou; Fakes Issued in 5 Minutes

According to authorities in Guangdong Province, an illicit “underground” visa business is thriving in Guangdong Province.

As visitors to the province have begun to increase – 26.16 million visitors entered through the Zhuhai immigration port in the first quarter of the year alone – the number of fake visas are also on the rise. Low prices, speedy processing times and sheer ease at obtaining these fake Chinese visas, have been the main factors in the business’s boom.

At an underground market in Kou’an, a large number of cell phone shops, currency exchange businesses and fruit vendors have been discovered to offer fake visa services. For 260-350 RMB, these vendors can create visas in as quickly as five minutes.

However, as one staff member at the immigration department in Zhuhai has pointed out, any visa not issued from an appointed embassy or consulate is deemed fake and illegal, or as authorities are calling them, “underground visas”. Even if some of these places claim to know insiders in consulates or embassies, such applications are illegal and should be avoided at all costs.
