The leftover phenomenon is quite prevalent in Shanghai, with a new survey revealing that the average age of single men in the city has risen to 31, the oldest in the country. The survey, which was carried out by wedding website Jiayuan.com, interviewed 56,000 men across the country, most of which were born in the seventies and eighties and had university degrees. 33.2% of the men interviewed from Shanghai stated they were “leftover men,” which ranked as the fifth highest in the country, with Guangxi Province claiming first place with 35%. Shanghai’s frantic living pace and potential mothers-in-laws with high salary expectations were listed as the main reasons forcing men to marry older, the survey found. Roughly 49% percent of those asked said they didn’t own a car or an apartment. The survey also revealed that there are nearly 12 million men aged 30-39 who are currently unmarried, in contrast to the 5.82 million women in the same age range.
