Things are going from bad to worse for the Malaysian tourism industry. On the evening of April 2, at the Singamata Hotel on an island in the Semporna archipelago, a group of armed militants sprang a surprise attack on the establishment. At the time there were around 60 Chinese tourists staying at the lodge.

Chaos ensued as the holiday goers scrambled for safety. When the proverbial dust had settled there were two people missing, a Shanghainese woman and a hotel staff member of Pilipino origins. They were last seen being forced onto a waiting boat by the militants who then sped off with their two new hostages. Malaysian police are still investigating the scene and hope to recover the two civilians as soon as possible.

This has get nothing to do with the missing flight. These Filipino insurgents have been kidnapping tourists for quite a while. In return for a ransom, they are usually released unharmed. Even then, Malaysia is now under tremendous pressure to get their security in order. I believe their tourism industry will get hit very badly. If it is so unsafe who'd want to go there. I used to travel to Malaysia every weekend to relax and for food. Sometimes I would also visit their island resorts like Tioman and Langkawi which are beautiful and tranquil. With the current state of events, perhaps I will go to Bali instead.

Yes, news here is heavily censored. If you read yahoo or cnn it's more detailed. In this case, they've located the victims to a small island south of the resort.
