Shanghai to Ban Gas-Powered Scooters by 2016
May 28, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The local government has announced that by 2016, scooters powered by petrol will be banned in the city. Anyone who owns such a bike can take it to a recycling center where they will receive a measly 200 RMB refund, and a discount voucher for an electric moped.

The local authorities have been slowly tightening the noose over the past few years with ever increasing restrictions on gas stations and mechanics. Local authorities also stopped registering the vehicles several years ago, meaning that most motorcycles in Shanghai are now operating on out of date paperwork.

The government is planning to have scrapped all the scooters in the city by 2016, and after that, anyone caught riding a gas powered scooter will be fined.

Petrol stations have also been warned not to service or modify gas-powered scooters.
