Shanghai Losing Appeal as Tourist Destination

Shanghai Losing Appeal as Tourist Destination
May 21, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Since hosting the 2010 World Expo, Shanghai has seen a steady decrease in yearly visitors. 2013 saw 7 and a half million people travel to the city, 5.4 percent down from 2012, which meant that only 5.34 billion USD was spent by outlanders; that’s 4.4 percent less than the previous year.

Analysts have come up with a couple of theories as to why this trend has developed. They blame the global economic situation, rising prices in Shanghai, rising tensions between China and Korean and Japan and a lack of appeal to younger tourists.

The city’s tourism officials will embark on an intensive campaign to reignite the city’s attractiveness and draw in more tourists over the next two years.

Go there to see what, snobs putting on tasteless shows, and for those who can't afford the real thing, how real their counterfeit stuffs (including their smiles) are?

This > soulless urban sprawl, grey, polluted, dirty... I would think pollution would be at least number 2 on the list of reasons. The fact that the city welcomes cars more than people might be pretty high too.
