During the afternoon of June 2, a woman from Shanghai’s Jiading District surnamed Lin was doing some housecleaning and planned to sell off some recyclable junk. She went up to the fourth floor of her apartment to pay a visit to a woman named Zhong, who dealt with the area’s recycling.
Zhong then followed Lin to her apartment, where Lin picked up two bags of old paper and gave it to her. Assuming it was all just waste paper; Zhong weighed up the bags, and gave Lin 7 RMB for the 10kg.
After about half an hour, Zhong rode her bike up to the neighborhood’s recycling dump, though found that she was being chased by a frantic-looking Lin. Lin grabbed the bags from Zhong’s bike, and explained that the bags she had given to her contained a total of 1 million RMB in cash, which took the form of 10,000 100 RMB notes.
After being asked why she had so much cash at home, Lin stated her husband had recently taken the cash out and left it home for some “urgent purpose”, though she didn’t know what that was.
