An online survey has shown that about 70% of Shanghai residents actually prefer reading in print to online, Shanghai Daily has reported. This is an increase of 5% compared to last year, when 65% of Shanghai residents preferred reading on paper to online.

The survey also showed that 44% of respondents said they spent more time on reading on paper when compared to online reading, while 33% indicated the opposite.

Of no surprise to anyone who commutes on China’s subway network – cellphones remain the most popular device to read on throughout Shanghai’s residents. The books they read were generally recommendations from friends or family, and 15% of residents said they were willing to pay 20 RMB or less for an online publication. In regards to printed books, the survey showed that 70% of respondents spent at least 50 RMB a year.
