Shanghai Cracks Down on Subway Ticket Dodgers

Despite frequent widely published exposés this year on people jumping the turnstiles in the Shanghai Subway system, it appears that it’s still a rather common occurrence. On the morning of May 29, 135 ticket dodgers were caught at the Xinzhuang, Loushanguan and Yangshupu Stations during a series of unannounced ticket inspections.

Previously, ticket jumpers were forced to pay up to five times the value of their journey if they were caught. Now, the fine has risen to 50 RMB per incident. Information from offenders’ ID cards is now also recorded and stored in the city’s transport authorities systems.
