School Uniform Worn by Students Meeting Michele Obama Slammed for Being Ugly

Those netizens are at it again, this time they are targeting the school uniforms of the students photographed meeting Michele Obama at a middle school in Beijing. The school in question is a middle school affiliated with  Beijing Normal University.

The incriminating photo made its way onto Weibo and accidently set off the school uniform debate that has been prevalent on the social media platform in recent years. Netizens are still questioning why students are forced to wear uniforms at all, and why the designs are so unattractive. While it’s generally understood that it reduces comparisons between students, they claim that it also blurs gender lines as boys and girls look alike when dressed in the same attire.

Those in defense of the uniforms say that they are cheap, practical and comfortable and prevent those students with less money from feeling different.

Does it matter if it blurs lines between gender?

Although admittedly unappealing aesthetically, they do indeed benefit students by blurring the socio-economic barriers between them. With regard to the lack of distinction between male and female attire, perhaps something should be done about that in the near future. Or, perhaps we are overlooking another benefit that the uniforms provide: they prevent students from being, how shall we say, visually distracted when they ought to be studying. I concede, this opinion will likely be poo-pooed by other Westerners.

Not by me it wont! I don't know if they need to make different ones for different genders though.

All school uniforms blur socio-economic barriers. That doesn't mean they have to look like crappy tracksuits.
