Food safety in China has gradually improved over the past few years. However, a number of issues have shown that food safety governance needs to be improved, according to Beijing’s recent “2015 China Food Safety Development Report.”

There were 2005 to 2014, there were 227,386 food safety incidents in China. In 2011 alone, there were 38,513 food safety incidents. The incidents were most in five categories: meat, vegetables, wine, fruit, and beverages. 40.54 percent of food safety incidents were in these categories.

75.5 percent of food safety incidents are caused by human error. 31.24 percent are caused by fraud including use of expired materials, sales of expired products, addition of illegal substances, or the general unlicensed or undocumented production of goods.
