Red Alert for Pollution Issued in Beijing

A red alert for heavy pollution was issued in Beijing yesterday evening for December 8-10. Schools and kindergartens may close due to the pollution and businesses can implement flexible working schedules. Odd and even plates will be implemented city-wide.

According to Beijing’s Heavy Pollution Emergency Plan, the city can take the following measures:

- Schools and kindergartens can close, enterprises can implement flexible working hours

- Odd and even license plate policy for cars (except for electric vehicles), and 30 percent of official vehicles. Extended hours and increased security for public transportation.

- Construction vehicles, garbage trucks, concrete-mixers, gravel truckers and other heavy vehicles are prohibited.

- Outdoor construction work will be halted.

- Industrial enterprises that pollute heavily will cease production during the red alert. Other enterprises will operate on a limited basis.

- Fireworks and outdoor barbecues are banned.
