The top three worries of the Chinese people are corruption, pollution and social inequality, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center.

Chinese people generally rated their personal economic situation positively, and recognized the economic growth the country has made in the past decades, despite the recent slowdown. They said that they enjoy the pace of modern life, but worry that modern culture threatens traditional culture, and hope that the people can strike a balance between the two.

The survey was done between May 27 and April 5, 2015. 3,649 Chinese adults were surveyed in face to face interviews.

Respondents rated the issues covered in the survey as “very important,” “moderately important,” and so on. 44 percent of respondents believe that the issue of corruption is “very important,” down 10 percent from 2014. Many believe that corruption will improve over the next five years.

35 percent of respondents said that air and water pollution are “very important” issues, and 30 percent said that the widening gap between rich and poor, food safety and rising prices are “very important.”

20 percent said that corrupt businesspeople, education, unemployment, and traffic are very large problems for China.
