When you spend a thousands of RMB on a designer item from Taobao, you may be buying a knockoff shipped from a small village.

Villagers in a small town outside of Zhuji, Shaoxing were caught with a huge stockpile of knockoff luxury goods that they planned to sell on Taobao.

Police recently raided a four-story home in the village with a small workshop inside. The first floor was used for packaging goods, and the second and third floors were filled with fake designer scarves.

“Hermes, Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton scarves—everything from the scarves, to packaging and bags, even invoices, certificates, POS machines and other documentation were there,” said the captain of the local inspection team.

Reporters at the scene documented a Hermes scarf with packaging, tags, and even UnionPay credit card receipts and invoices from a fake purchase abroad. Law enforcement officials said that the high quality fakes were sold for 2,000 RMB online to suppliers. Real versions of the scarves are priced at more than 10,000 RMB.

The man in charge of the “workshop”, Zhou, said that the scarves only cost a few hundred RMB to make. He said that he started doing business this past January, and that business has been good.

The workshop produced fake versions of 17 well-known international luxury brands. The products made were mostly scarves but also included bags, boxes and packaging, luxury product receipts, and POS machines.
