When Mr. Wu looked out his apartment window last week, he saw a strange sight: the half-empty buildings near his home looked like they were floating in the clouds. He quickly took out his mobile phone and posted the photos online.
“It continued for nearly half an hour, until the sky darkened and the buildings gradually disappeared,” said Wu. He said it was the first time he had seen a mirage in real life.
Wu lives in Shatian New District in Wuning Country, Jiangxi. The photos were taken around 5 pm in the evening.
Mirages occur because of a combination of light refraction and total internal reflection. In order words, mirages are images created by light reflections. They often occur in coastal or sandy areas and are rarely seen in cities.
