Olympic Lip-Syncing Singer Champions Censorship - Lee Kaifu to the Rescue!

Olympic Lip-Syncing Singer Champions Censorship - Lee Kaifu to the Rescue!
Apr 03, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Amid the sea of controversies that surrounded the 2008 Beijing Olympics, some of us may remember cute little Lin Miaoke, whose lip-syncing skills were shown to billions across the world as she mouthed “Ode to Motherland” at the opening ceremony of the games.

Now 13, Lin has been fighting back at all the criticism she received after the fallout of the lip-syncing scandal apparently by recently glorifying China’s online censors on Weibo. One of her posts reads: “We should be protected by Sina. The type of speech that is harmful to people’s physical and mental health should be eradicated. Sina, you can do it!”

Her posts have since been re-blogged more than 23,000 times on Weibo, with Lin using the iron fist of censorship to limit the (only positive) comments to 61. Ex Google China President Lee Kaifu, who was recently involved in censorship issues himself, stepped into the frame however, with a comment that read: “Miaoke, you will understand after you grow up—angry people get angrier if you block their speech, freedom of speech is an unalienable right of human beings…so we must tolerate freedom of speech, not censorship.”

Some have stated that there should be censorship on harsh comments directed at minors online however.

I don't understand this! I really don't! The first comment is so rude it should be taken down and the second comment chooses to follow a 13 year old girl who doesn't know any better! Neither are very productive! Fact is that this was the chosen girl to lip-sing. That was 5 years ago, so she was 8 years old! Surely it was NOT her idea but her mother's or father's to join the competition for singing for the Olympics. To personally attack that girl isn't fair, it's not right, she is a child and that is why she says she supports censorship, when in fact she has no idea what she is saying. I am glad that Mr. Lee Kaifu straightened out this situation. However I do not fully agree with him: Angry people should first calm down and think before they get to dispense their anger in the internet! If too many angry people talk too much only emotional and personal attacks are written and that is NOT helpful. I think we should have an "Angry People Platform" where you can say whatever you want, but people and the government know not to take it seriously nor personally. Then after they calmed down, and can explain their anger rationally maybe tangible solutions can be found instead! We as a humanity need to start growing up, because we are only as strong as the weakest link, and that link is very weak, in every nation, not just China, but Europe and America is just as much part of it!

Welcome to the English language. You have chosen 1) How to spot humour in a response. When something is so ridiculous it is a normal reaction to a) laugh b) mock.... You have chosen mock. Mock is to make fun of. Perhaps a person is considered a sheep or someone decides to blindly follow a kid. Next time on Welcome to English we will introduce the concept of straight out lying.
