Nongfu Spring Announce Permanent Ceasing of Water Barrels in Beijing
May 10, 2013 By eChinacities.com

After reports surfaced that shops in Beijing had been told to pull Nongfu Spring 5-gallon barrels from the shelves on May 3, the drinking water giant announced on May 6 that due to an “adverse business environment,” and for “the company’s dignity,” they have decided to permanently cease production of the barrels in Beijing.

The company stated that the 100,000 residents who had prepaid for their water would be given five four-liter barrels of Nongfu Spring produced in other provinces in place of the usual prepaid 19-liter (5 gallon) barrel.

This development is the latest in the Nongfu Spring water quality saga, which recently saw the company filing a 60 million RMB lawsuit against the Beijing Times for claims by the newspaper that their water was “worse than tap water.”

Curiously, Nongfu Spring will continue supplying barrelled water to the government, though normal citizens will no longer be able to buy the barrels.
