Shops in Beijing Notified to Pull Nongfu Spring 5-Gallon Jugs from the Shelves

Well-known Chinese bottled water company Nongfu Spring has come under fire after a test carried out last March found samples of the water to contain traces of a floating black substance that was said to be garbage sediment originating from city water.

On April 9, experts announced that upon further investigation, Nongfu Spring water was in fact even unhealthier than tap water; a statement which was confirmed on April 11 by Ma Jinya, the secretary of the Drinking Water Committee. Amid accusations, Nongfu Spring pointed the finger at rival company C’estbon Food and Beverage (based in Shenzhen), claiming that it initiated the claims to take advantage of people’s on-going fears over food safety.

Despite it’s claims of innocence, on May 3, Beijing’s Bottled Water Sales Association published a notice, recommending all shops in Beijing to pull Nongfu Spring 5-gallon jugs of water off the shelves, citing that the company was suspected of violating multiple national drinking water quality standards as well as disseminating false propaganda to mislead consumers.
