New Law to Introduce Jail Time for Consumers of Wild Animals

New Law to Introduce Jail Time for Consumers of Wild Animals

This week the National People’s Congress will discuss a bill that will clarify the law on practices surrounding wild animals. The current law bans the hunting of wild animals, but has vague rules regarding the purchasing of the animal from the hunter or distributor.

The new law will attempt to clarify the position the law takes on buying these animals for eating or other purposes. The proposal is for offenders to receive jail sentences for a minimum of 5 years, and a possibility of a sentence exceeding a decade.

One of the proponents of the law, Lang Sheng (deputy head of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee) said that not only is the practice of buying and/or eating these endangered animals bad social practice, but it also encourages the hunting industry to thrive.

The list of these wild animals currently has 470 terrestrial vertebrates on it, including giant pandas and golden monkeys among others. This is an important step to eradicating the outdated practice of hunting and eating certain rare animals based on cultural norms.
