That's a lot of cat videos and Taobao orders! There are now 668 million Chinese Netizens, according to a report released today by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). Wow. To put that number in perspective, that's more than double the population of the United States.

In the past six months alone, almost 19 million Chinese used the Internet for the first time. 48.8% of Chinese now use the Internet, an increase of 0.9% from 2014.

China also has 594 million smart phone users, with almost 37 million new users in the past six months. 88.9% of China's mobile phone owners use smart phones.

27.9% of China's Internet users live in rural areas- about 186 million people. This number has increased by 8 million in the past six months.

Mobile phones are the most popular Internet devices, followed by desktop computers and laptops. 88.9% of Internet users connect on their mobile phones, while 68.4% use a desktop and 42.5% use a laptop (it seems that those surveyed could choice more than one option). Tablet use in China is down a bit, only 33.7% of Netizens use tablets, 1.1% less than six months ago. Only 16% of Internet users use smart TVs to get online.

As of last month, there were about 22 million registered Chinese domain names. Out of these, 54.9% or 12.25 million were “.cn,” domains. There were also 260,000 domain names with that used the word “China.”

There are 3.57 million websites registered in China and 16.3 million “.cn,” sites.
