Mutianyu Mishap: Canadian Accidentally Kills Old Chinese Woman On Great Wall
Apr 09, 2015 By eChinacities.com

On April 8, an elderly woman from Heilongjiang died on the Mutianyu Great Wall after being knocked over by a Canadian woman. The woman, Cui Hongji, was 70 years old and in good health. She was knocked down by an oncoming Canadian woman, who was rushing down the steps.

Cui had been accompanied that day by her family: Mr. Song and his wife and children. Mr. Song said that foreign woman had been “speeding down the steps,” and crashed into the old woman, who had not been holding onto the railing. Cui hit her head hard on the stone steps, and started to bled. She died shortly after the collision.

The foreign woman is from Canada and is under investigation by the Beijing PSB, but police announced that there will not be a criminal case filed against her.

Update. That Canadian may need to pays thousands and thousands of yuan in a civil suit. Any way to get money out of foreigners. It's an accident. Remember all those cases where old people fell or got knocked down accidentally ? Well this time a foreigner was involved. Money, money, money.

Its funny how all the white people on here are so quick to jump to the woman's defence and saying its just an unfortunate accident. I wonder what the reaction would be if it the roles were reversed and this was in canada.

Do you personally know they are white? I seen one borderline defensive comment. It was an unfortunate accident, clearly. Do you think the average Canadian person hops on a plane one day and just says "Hey, let's kill an old lady today!" There is no proof that I can see here that the lady was too fast. The only proof is witnesses, which would be compiled mainly of mainlanders who would be biased in anycase. It's a sad story and you are a sad person who also jumps to conclusions. If it were so bad and the person was putting others at risk intentionally I am sure there would be charges. It also only made news here because the purp was foreign. It happens everyday. Sorry it was you this day old lady.

Yes, because all Canadians are white. As are all echinacities posters. And it was an accident, even the article says so. Unless you have some information that the person was ambling around the Great Wall thinking, 'Lulz, I'm going to run into an old lady and cause her to die of head trauma in front of her children! Because it will be an awesome campfire story!' The Canadian is probably a normal human being, and any normal human being must be very scarred by such a disaster. My condolences to the family.

What are you talking about? Accidents like this happen everywhere. They just don't normally get put in the national news. But in China, since it involved a foreigner... it goes national... Do you really think this is the first death on the Great Wall of China? I am sure this kind of thing happens amongst Chinese quite often on the wall (especially during busy periods).

Yes and no... Is the story news worthy? Yes, if someone fell off the empire state building and died, it would be on the news too... Did the story get more attention in China than normal because it is a FOREIGNER that killed a Chinese person? Absolutely. But I'm surprised that anyone is still surprised by this... people love controversies (or really just racial conflicts in this case), and that's why we get stories like these.. do you think that the Tavon Martin case would get 1/10 of the coverage it did if he were white? Sometimes I really don't get this "foreigners are discriminated against in China" sentiment on this board. It is true that foreigners are treated differently in China, but it is generally for the better. It is absolutely true that the Chinese are racist, but cuz of this, you have phenomenons like "face jobs" or ONS with Chinese girls from bars and clubs (maybe I should say much much easier for you because when a Chinese girl wants to "explore" the world, she always lands on a white dick, funny isn't it)...Oh, by foreigners I mean white guys in China...

Treated generally for the better is your point of view. If you want to fuck nasty bar girls, great. If you want jobs where you are not actually doing anything and people look down on you, great. Do you actually believe these are positive things or do you just like talking nonsense?

people look down on? by who? the Chinese? All face jobs are incredibly well paid and the fact that people DON'T look down on them is the why they exist in the first place... It's like I tell you that there's a restaurant with a sign says only whites allowed, and I tell you there's a great amount of inequality and social injustice going on in this case, and your argument is "well, the food sucks so you don't wanna go there anyways, just go to a different one instead, aim higher"

I don't think you understand Chinese culture, at all. Face jobs pay more than ESL, but if you think people look up to you for doing it, you are tripping. They look up to the person who hired you because your presence there is basically a display of how much he can pay to get a white person to show up at his party. It is like how European royalty used to import exotic animals. You are seen as an exotic animal at face gigs, by the way. An expensive, shaved, exotic animal.

You didn't really get my point. The bottom line is that it is a high paying job offered only to people of a certain race. It is the very definition of racial inequality is it not? You can look down on it because of your personal sense of pride, but before you say anything you should consider that there are lots of people who are never even afforded this type of opportunities only because of the color of their skin...I wonder what white privilege means

0 to 100, real quick... That's how it escalated from being an accident to a racial thing. Sad how we dine and party together but bash each other in online forums.

Well said kimenia, have my vote for your fair insight of things that happened.Firstly, aren't we suppose to be feeling sorry for tragic of this nature? We are here sharing the most populous land on earth where the ratio of incidents of good and unpleasants taking place at a rate greater than any other you may think of. Learn from the good ones and leave the uncalled for alone if you're not able to provide comments for improvements.

It sounds like an accident to me and if a had a dollar for every time I asked politely for a Chinese person to get out of the way. They're always blocking entrances, absentmindedly stop right in front of you. Who knows what really happened. It seems as if the woman might have stopped abruptly right in front of the Canadian. I'm sorry she died though. Of they make a big deal out of this they will chase away the few foreign tourists they get these days. But then again maybe that's what they want.

thats a fucked up comment. Who knows what really happened so lets just all blame the victim first because thats probably how they act. Racist.

If the shoe was on the other foot they would still put the blame on the foreigner. I don't know how long you've been here , but it happens all the time, it's an in fortunate accident yes. It's terrible she died. I feel we don't have all the facts. If that woman gets railroaded just see how it effects tourism.

A lot of them do act like that... constantly cutting each other off, stopping abruptly for no reason as if nothing exists behind them. Walking in strange zig zag movements and thinking the other person should move for them. Most Chinese do this... it is the truth.

That's why I know it was an accident and if that Canadian woman gets put in jail for an accident they can kiss foreign tourism and the Olympics goodbye. As it is foreign tourism is way down in Beijing. The air, traffic and general rudeness of people that this city and enough to keep people away. It's terrible that the woman died. It's sad. But if I had ten yuan for every time I saw people stop for no reason, play on the steps and yes even play on the escalators and nearly fall off I'd be a wealthier woman. Just look at all the signs on the stairwells and escalators in the subway stations. People here simply don't know the proper way to do anything otherwise, they would have six signs everywhere.

An accident is an accident. "She was speeding down the stairs..." "The old woman wasn't holding on to the railing..." Just sounds like one of those things... a tragic event due to lack of safety by two different parties.
