Missing Hong Kong Bookstore Owner Lee Bo Faxes Letter to Staff

Missing Hong Kong bookstore owner Lee Bo’s faxed a letter to store staff from Mainland China yesterday. Lee wrote in the letter saying he had gone to China “voluntarily,” and was “cooperating with certain parties in an investigation.” “I’m in good condition,” he wrote.

He reportedly also faxed a letter to his wife, who subsequently withdrew her missing person’s report she had previously filed.

In the past two months, four others related to the bookstore have gone missing. Chinese media reports that Lee had originally disappeared in Hong Kong, which caused Mainland police to question the actions of the Hong Kong police. Mainland police then brought Lee to Hong Kong for an investigation.

Others suspect that Lee Bo was taken to the Mainland against his will.

Lee Bo’s letter reads:

Mr. Chen

There are some urgent issues that I need to handle. I cannot tell the outside world about them. I have gone to the Mainland on my own accord. The investigation may take some time.

Can you please continue to operate the bookstore in accordance with the contract? You can contact my wife to find the numbers for the book models, and give yourself an advance until I get back. Keep reports until I return.

I’m in good condition, everything is normal. Hopefully the bookstore is not too much trouble. Thanks very much!

Lee Bo
