Cloud service providers Akamai Technologies recently released a ranking of the countries and regions with the fastest Internet. The countries are ranked according to average Internet speed.
The United States is ranked 17th on the list, and China is ranked 82nd.

2) Hong Kong
Average Network Speed: 16.8 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 37%
3) Japan
Average Network Speed: 15.2 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 16%
4) Sweden
Average Network Speed: 14.6 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 34%
5) Switzerland
Average Network Speed: 14.5 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 21%
6) Netherlands
Average Network Speed: 14.2 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 15%
7) Latvia
Average Network Speed: 13 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 25%
8) Ireland
Average Network Speed: 12.3 Mbps
Speed Growth Over the Past Year: 8.4%
9) Czech Republic

Lol I remember my students' surprise/outrage that HK is so high in the world HDI rankings. Basically my answer was: Well it wouldn't be that high if it were included in China.
