Kunming Locals Affectionately Rename Polluted Stream the “River of Milk”

Yunnan may be known for being one of the less-polluted (by Chinese standards) parts of the country, though that doesn’t stop it from being the focal point of a typical “China pollution story” from time to time.

In Kunming’s Dongchuan District, locals have nicknamed a nearby stream the “River of Milk,” after discharge from nearby mining industries turned the stream a not so healthy looking shade of white.

The meeting point of the stream and the nearby Jinsha river, which is naturally yellow from the muddy banks, is now a vibrant mix of white and yellow, much to the surprise of the locals who have named it the “multicolored river.”

Locals obviously know better than to drink or even swim in the river, though have stated that even after three days of precipitation the water has a strange spicy tinge to it.

Somewhat disconcertingly, villagers who’ve also been using the water to wash peanuts have noted that after being washed, a mysterious white powder is left on the ground.
