KFC will open its first store in Tibet next month. The franchise will open in 2016 in Lhasa, according to Reuters.

The 540 square meter store will be located in Lhasa’s Shenli Shidai Square, and is currently under renovation.

KFC has had plans to set up a store in Tibet for over a decade. In 2004, the company had planned to open a store in the region. The Dalai Lama, a strict vegetarian, had staunchly opposed the plan. However, KFC said that it was not “economically feasible,” to open a store in Tibet back in 2004, and the Dalai Lama’s opposition had no impact on their decision.
