Jellyfish Invasion on Yantai Beach

Jellyfish Invasion on Yantai Beach

Tourists were startled on Saturday evening as tide washed in hundreds of jellyfish, leaving the beach completely carpeted in the wobbly sea-creatures.

According to experts, it is peak breeding season for the jellyfish of the Yellow Sea, causing them to come out in larger numbers than usual. Due to their rubbish swimming abilities they were caught up in the tide and have now been left stranded on the beach.

Could this be a case for Qingdao’s foreign beach hero?

I thought jellyfish were huge, shark-eating creatures?

We have to be ready for these jellyfish swarms at the same time each year. In places like Hawaii they sting tourists that swim in the water. Their stingers are active even when they are washed up on the beach. Some fishes that humans eat feed on jellyfish. The jellyfish that are in the photo should be rounded up and sent to a fish farm. Jellyfish are effected by wind and tide conditions in some years more than others. In some years the harvest of jellyfish will be great and in others the harvest will be less.
