Foreigner in Qingdao Clearing Litter Earns Praise from Netizens
May 27, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A foreigner who has been frequently spotted picking up trash has been praised by commentators online. The blond man has been clearing up after litterbugs on Qingdao’s Number 8 Daxia beach, collecting leftover plastic bags, bottles and other debris.

A nearby fisherman said that he often saw the man collecting garbage as soon as the tide goes out, walking along the shore line, not caring if he fell and slipped into the water.

When asked why he did this, the man simply replied that he likes Qingdao and wants to do his part to make it more beautiful.

Photos of the man were uploaded to the internet and many Netizens commended the man’s actions, with one commenting “…he has so much positive energy! We should all learn from him!”

Hopefully this will inspire people to stop littering and look after the beach a little better.

Thanks for the article and entertaining comments. If anything, the attention has inspired me to do more. I'm hoping it will catch on. Qingdao is a beautiful city but there are too many dirty people. I have more free time than most people so this is what i choose to do when i have the energy. I'm thrilled that i may have inspired people to do more.

He doesn't seem blonde. Not that it matters.

Crazy how this makes the news in China. "Foreign man is crazy! Picks up trash! How unbelievable! A normal person (and a foreigner at that) actually picking up trash!" Can you imagine the equivalent abroad: "Black haired Chinese man seen picking up trash, awarded medal".

Can someone explain to me why is he automatically a foreigner? Many German descendants have been in Qingdao for many generations longer than many Chinese families. For those of you who foolishly believe that you can make China your home, look at this article.

I think this will not stop people from littering for a while. Chinese people littering is a habit they have that will take a while to get rid of.

they laugh at our foolishness for taking care of our own rubbish because there are 'people whose job it is to do this'. People don't learn to pick up after themselves because from an early age (and i see this regularly), grandparents run after children either picking their rubbish up or just kicking it to one side. the child never learns that they should pick up after themselves.

Errrr... I pick trashes on my way to work, the plastic bags to carry breakfast food. People are too careless to use the numerous garbage cans, so the bags end up in the bushes or the waterways. My trash picking does not seems to inspire a lot. Rather than people learning, I would like to see people acting and talking.

We all know they are incapable of learning but i find the best method is embarrassment. If i see someone throwing crap i pick it up and hand it back to them. Hopefully they will have a sense of shame and not chuck it the second i turn around
