According to Kyodo news service a 70 year-old Japanese politician was detained in Guangzhou on October 31 on suspicion of carrying drugs. Hong Lei, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, only confirmed his arrest on November 15. Hong said of Japanese national Takuma Sakuragi, now in custody, that 3.3 kg of drugs had been found in his suitcase and that the case is under investigation.

An official from the Japanese consulate has met with Sakuragi and stated that Sakuragi is denying all charges.

This is the first time a Japanese politician has been involved in drug smuggling in China and arrested for it, according to the BBC. However, four Japanese nationals were executed in China in 2010 for drug smuggling. According to Chinese law, possession of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine can lead to the death penalty.
