Foreign National Caught Smuggling Drugs Overseas from Guangzhou

Counternarcotics teams in Guangzhou have been cracking down on the illegal drug trade in Guangzhou this year, arresting hundreds of suspects many of whom are foreign nationals.

In the latest bust, a man from an unnamed African country was caught collaborating with a female Chinese foreign language teacher surnamed Chen in an effort to smuggle drugs overseas from Guangzhou.

Ms. Chen had been on the police radar due to frequent trips taken to South East Asia with the African man, according to reports. On July 10, police spotted Ms. Chen meeting with two African men on line 2 of the metro near Sanyuanli station. They stopped her and inspected their luggage, eventually finding 2kg of drugs hidden in the soles of her platform shoes.

Reports also allege that this drug gang was colluding with other non-Chinese drug smugglers hiding in Guangzhou and that they would often try to lure or trick young Chinese women into working with them. The majority of women who allegedly collaborated with the drug gang couldn’t resist the monetary awards or were lured in out of love. Ms. Chen reportedly joined the gang because of the money; all suspects are currently being detained while investigations continue.
