Mozart’s most well known and beloved choral work will meet Gershwin’s much acclaimed ragtime influenced experimental jazz ‘concerto’ in one evening. Although the pieces are vastly different, these two giants of classical music embodied a similar vision and ability to amplify and revolutionize contemporary orchestral forms.
Gerswin’s inspiration for ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ was America itself; the seamless mixing of modern jazz with classical orchestration perfectly represents the ‘kaleidoscope of America’: a melting pot of languages and cultures.
Mozart’s Requiem was originally commissioned anonymously by an eccentric count who intended to pass it off as his own work; however, Mozart passed away half way through composing the piece and the piece was finished by other composers, although exactly how many, and who composed what, is a mystery that remains unsolved today.
