Has Technology Gone Too Far? Smartphone Users now Able to Contact the Dead

Enjoy your Tomb Sweeping holiday, yet equally frustrated that you have to work on a Sunday? Hopefully this one will cheer you up, as it seems that technology in China has made that extra step into the absurd by apparently entering the netherworld.

QR codes—those instantly recognizable and ubiquitous carriers of virtual information—are now being featured on tombstones in China; so any grievers or people who happen to be taking a stroll in a graveyard can access information about the deceased using their tablets or smartphones.

Information such as photos, videos, and stories can be accessed by scanning the codes, enabling almost anyone to gain personal information about the deceased. The codes are being featured on graves in Shanghai, Shenyang, and Fujian, and have drawn a mixed reaction from the online community, with some voicing concern that it is disrespectful to the dead. What do you think? Has technology gone too far this time?
