Fresh from the gutter to your plate no longer—everybody’s favorite carcinogenic substance, gutter oil, is now going to be used to power buses in Shanghai, according to recent reports.
In related news, Shanghai introduced tougher regulations for the proper disposal of waste oil back in March, which Shanghai Municipal Food Safety Committee Director Yan Zuqiang says has resulted in 90 percent of oil being recycled properly.
Still, there must be tons of the stuff floating around Shanghai’s hole-in-the-wall restaurants, so this at least comes as a mild relief that it’s going to fed to buses rather than our bellies in the near future.
