The Guangzhou Municipal and District Government announced plans yesterday to build 30 football pitches in 12 different districts. The government is hoping to build a further 70 by 2016, making a total of 100 in the next two years.
The first 30 pitches will be scaled down to suit smaller games of up to 7 a side. They will utilize unused lots, rooftops and grassy areas of parks.
A spokesperson for the government department said that the parks will be available to all members of the public and for at least 10 hours a day will be either free of charge or at a subsidized rate.
