The number of people infected with dengue fever in Guangdong Province has now surpassed 21,000, with reported cases totaling 21,527 by Sunday October 5.

The outbreak has claimed six lives so far, but the virus is spreading at an alarming rate, nearly doubling within the space of a week.

Officials are struggling to contain the problem which has most severely affected the city of Guangzhou, although cases have also been reported in Shenzhen and other surrounding cities.
