Gansu Pensioner’s Life Savings Eaten by a Sheep

One woman in her late 70’s in Wuwei City, Gansu recently learned the hard way how not to save your money. Wang Lanying led a very frugal lifestyle for many years in order to save 20,000 RMB. But because she didn’t know how to deposit the money in the bank, she thought it was a good idea to bury the cash on her property instead. What Wang didn’t anticipate is that her very own sheep would eventually sniff it out and eat it!

On the night of September 2, Wang’s daughter Zhao Jingcheng received a frantic call from her mother. She immediately rushed to her house to find out what happened. When she got there, Wang was lying on the ground heartbroken. Zhao then learned that her mother had secretly been saving money for years in order to one day pay for her own funeral expenses. But because she couldn’t read or write, she didn’t know how to go about saving it in a bank. Zhao noticed hoof prints leading away from the scene of the crime and realized that the sheep was the culprit.

She then killed the sheep and retrieved the heavily damaged notes from its stomach. After giving the cash a good wash, Zhao took the semi-digested shreds to various banks in Wuwei City but was told that the notes were too damaged to be replaced.

However, a ray of hope came on September 5 when one of the banks called to say that the incident has been reported to higher departments. While they’re still waiting for an answer, Wang and Zhao are hopeful that the money can be replaced.
