Foreign Couple Arrested in Beijing for Drug-Trafficking

On August 26, the third branch of the Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate approved the arrest of a foreign couple suspected of smuggling drugs.

On July 22, authorities stopped a couple passing through Terminal 2 in Beijing Capital Airport. When asked about their reason for visiting Beijing, the couple said they were travelling here for medical treatment. However neither could recall the name of a specific hospital.

An X-ray image later revealed that the pair had swallowed 80 packets containing heroine – a total of 815 grams. While the nationality of the couple has not been revealed, the male suspect has claimed that one drug smuggling operation would earn him $2000 USD.

Under Chinese law, an attempt to smuggle 50 grams or more of heroin or equivalent drugs is punishable with the death penalty.
