Flightless Fowl in Frenzied Fracas: Ostrich on Loose in Zhengzhou

You know when your children implore you, “Can we keep him?” and look at you with those adorable eyes? Well, this is what ends up happening when you agree: complete urban chaos.

On November 16, the City of Zhengzhou lay in mayhem and disorder when two ostriches broke out from a family home. The wayward birds ran into the streets as panicked city residents worked themselves into a frenzied lather upon the sight of these “escaped jailbirds”.

Three hunting dogs employed to capture these freed ostriches were kicked and severely wounded. Some city residents were unfortunate enough to be trampled by the flightless fowl.

Nearly an hour and a half after their flirtation with freedom the ostriches were finally subdued, the last had to be tackled by four men.

As ostriches are not indigenous to Zhengzhou, owner Wang Meng explained that he had bought two ostriches when they were young. At that time, they were just the size of a chicken; Wang had never thought they would grow up to be over 2 meters tall and weigh over 50 kg. Wang says the ostriches are house pets and serve as entertainment for his children.

Authorities may be investigating into what other pets and toys Wang’s children keep.

I guess he got tired of entertaining and decided to bounce without prior notice. Sounds very familiar.
