Five Detained in Shanghai Husi Food Scandal Latest
Jul 23, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration Bureau has begun investigations into leaders at the Shanghai Husi Food Co Ltd, the company implicated in a food quality scandal this week for supplying popular brands including McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks with old, expired meat.

5 people have been detained in connection with the scandal including the head of the company and the firm’s quality manager.

Preliminary results have shown that the illegal processing and sale of the expired meat was knowingly organized by the company, as opposed to being the fault of individual workers at the firm. Furthermore, the Dragon TV documentary which initially blew the whistle on Husi’s operations showed that the company handed over doctored records to quality control inspectors and altered their workplace standards when scheduled inspections took place.

So far the Shanghai food watchdog has sealed and taken away 1,000 tons of food from the factory for inspection, as well as around 100 tons of food from Husi’s various customers. The quality control authorities will interview 22 of Husi’s customers in an attempt to disclose the full scale of the cover up.
