Former Security Chief of China Zhou Yongkang was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for the abuse of power, accepting bribes, and revealing state secrets. He is the highest ranking member of the CCP to be jailed for corruption in the history of the Party.
Zhou served as the Security Chief of China and controlled the nation's police and justice system. The investigation against him began last summer as part of Xi's wide-spread crackdown on corruption. Zhou previously served on the Politburo Standing Committee with Xi Jinping three years ago.
Zhou was found guilty of accepting over 130 million Yuan ($21.3 million) in bribes. Xinhua reported that his wife and son accepted bribes amounting to $20 million but it is unclear if they are being prosecuted. The Zhou family holds assets worth more than $160 million.
Zhou also leaked six confidential documents to an unauthorized person, and used his position to help five of his friends including Jiang Jiemin make money.
