On Friday, April 18, 15 Nepalese Sherpas were killed in an avalanche that has been deemed one of the deadliest disasters in the history of mountaineering on Mount Everest. The search party found 12 bodies, with 4 still missing and 3 of them assumed to be dead and buried in the snow.

The disaster took place at 6:45 am and hit a group of Sherpas and cooks who had taken off from base camp at 03:00 on their way to camp one, at an altitude of 5,800 meters. Rescue workers reached the site within 45 minutes but it was too late for some.

The last serious disaster of this scale to hit the mountain took place in 1996 when eight climbers were killed in a snowstorm at 8,000 meters. The events of the tragedy were retold in Jon Krakauer’s famous novel, Into Thin Air.
