Nuclear Disaster in China “Highly Probable” by 2030

Former state nuclear physicist and prominent critic He Zuoxiu claims that China is heading for a nuclear accident if it continues with current construction plans, according to a recent article published on environmental website Chinadialogue.net. China currently has 15 nuclear power stations and is planning to have a total of 41 by 2015 and 71 by 2020.

Second generation technology, lack of experience running nuclear power plants, geographic challenges like earthquakes and mathematic calculations based on current statistics on the probability of nuclear disasters are all cited as reasons as to why a nuclear disaster is very likely in the next two decades.

Another disconcerting fact is China’s plans to build up to 500 nuclear power stations by 2050, exceeding the current global total of 443 plants.
