Dongguan Sex Industry Generates 50 Billion RMB Annually

Dongguan has been dubbed ‘sex city’ after police carried out citywide raids on over 2,000 entertainment venues. Dongguan, a sprawling manufacturing city in Guangdong, is well-known for its booming sex industry. Chinese media estimates that there are 300,000 people employed in bathhouses, hairdressers and hotels that are fronts for the illicit trade in the city of 7-8 million people, and that it generates as much as 50 billion RMB annually, which is roughly 10% of the local GDP.
