A Shanghai court has upheld the death sentence handed to former Fudan University student Lin Senhao for the murder of his roommate, China Daily reports.

Lin was first sentenced in February for the 2011 poisoning of his roommate, Huang Yang. According to reports at the time, Lin and Huang didn’t get on and Lin claimed that he put the deadly substance Nitrosodimethylamine in Huang’s water as an April Fool’s prank, not knowing that it would kill him.

In May, several Fudan University students petitioned to have Lin’s death sentence repealed and Lin’s father attempted to apologise to Huang’s parents, who rejected both the petition and the apology.

Lin was originally sentenced to death for intentional homicide as he not only poisoned Huang, but failed to cooperate with doctors by giving them potentially life saving information.
