Chinese Student Deported from U.S. in GRE Cheating Scandal

A Chinese student has been deported for hiring others to take the GRE in his place. The “hired gun,” who took the test for him may face jail time.

The Chinese student, Li pled guilty for cheating on college entrance tests by hiring another Chinese student to take the test for him. Li was sentenced to five years probation and was immediately deported. The main defendant in the case, Tong Han, pleaded guilty and has yet to be sentenced.

Tong was a “hired gun,” paid to take tests like the SAT, TOEFL, and GRE for other Chinese students. He now faces up to 55 years in prison and a 1 million Dollar fine.

Tong confessed that he was the ringleader of a gang of 5 to 7 test takers from 2011 to 2015. The gang helped Chinese students cheat on a total of 10 tests including the SAT, GRE, and TOEFL. For every exam taken, Tong charged 2,000 Dollars.

U.S. prosecutors filed a lawsuit against 15 Chinese students in May alleging that the students used fraudulent means to take the SAT and other examinations. The students were charged for conspiracy, forgery of passports, and mail and communications fraud.

Li was the first defendant in the case to plead guilty. He admitted to the judge that he spent nearly 6,000 Dollars to hire others to take the GRE for him. He had gained admission to Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 with his test scores.

In order to help Tong and his “hired guns,” take the exam in his place, Li help the group create a fake passport with Han Tong's photo and Li's information.

The world is learning that Chinese, for cultural and ideological reasons, can't ever be trusted. Sit and watch, it's going to be interesting.

This shouldn't even been news anymore. It is so extremely common for Chinese to cheat that it SHOULD be news when Chinese actually do the hard work and don't embarrass themselves and their people's reputation.

At some point elite universities like the 3 mentioned in article are going to decide that admitting Chinese nationals is not worth the risk of falsified credentials and cheating. Unlike lower tier institutions, they aren't as hungry for the full price tuition that international students pay, because they have huge endowments. When Chinese find it harder and harder to get into the Ivy level universities, they will blame everyone except their fellow Chinese, who messed it up for everyone.

Wow, how surprising. I bet the students involved are actually shocked that these things are taken seriously in those parts of the world where the universities aren't jokes.
